In fact, I wish I owned more barrel options for my 500A and had at least one 870 in my possession (preferably a super-magnum or 16 ga. I do not hate nor have distaste for the Model 870 or 500 shotguns. So before you release you rage upon an emotionless computer screen or better yet, try to vent your frustrations to me in the comments, let me explain.
With all that being said, I can now make my debate igniting declaration the High Standard produced Model 200 and Model 20 are the best pump-action shotguns ever produced in the United States of America with no exceptions even those exceptions that will be argued to be made for the Remington 870 and Mossberg 500 series. It even had a chance to take my first turkey alongside my father, a plump 23lb Tom with a 9″ beard. It has been carried often into the duck blind after wild fowl in the fall, and in the summer through the hay fields and pastures of Central New York to decimate massive flocks of starlings.

All that has changed as an estimated 1800 plus rounds of target and hunting loads have been run through it. When I first had this scattergun placed in my hands, it was in like-new condition, and had no wear marks. It has worn well, and stood the test of time. It has never malfunction, missed its mark, or failed to discharge under harsh weather conditions. My experience with this firearm stretches over the course of the past 11 years as it has served me dutifully as a hunting and recreational tool. 583.58, equipped with a Power-Pak muzzle device and choke system.
The specific variant I own is the Model 20-12 GA. Overall, I do believe the Model 20 is one of the best pump-action shotguns produced in post war America, and far outdoes it predecessors. At the time of introduction, defining features of the Model 20 that differentiate it from its contemporaries (such as the Winchester Model 12, the Remington Models 10, 17, 29, 870 (1949), and the Ithaca Model 37) are its “retracted” lift gate, which rests against the bottom of the bolt and descends upon retracting the action to lift the new cartridge, a fixed barrel and no capability to “break down” for compact transport or storage.

Mechanically and aesthetically, this firearm is reminiscent of the Mossberg 500 series of shotguns, yet the design pre-dates the 500 series (which was introduction in 1960.) It’s function is closer to that of the Remington Model 31, but all three shotguns are very similar. The Model 20, for all intents and purposes, is the same as the High Standard Model 200 and its subsequent variants. Some variances and higher grades were finished with aluminum name plates on the toe of the stock in addition to jeweled bolts and cartridge lifters. These firearms feature finely milled receivers and internal components, proof tested barrels, robust walnut stocks, and fine blue finishes. The Model 20 shotgun came in a number of variants featuring different barrel lengths, at least one muzzle device option( The Power-Pak), and the 3 previously mentioned gauges, all with 2 ¾” chambers. Higgins sporting goods line, replacing it in 1962 with the Ted Williams line of products. Introduced in 1946 and offered in 12, 16 and 20 gauges, production continued until the early 60’s, when Sears discontinued the J.C. The Model 20, pump action shotgun is a prime example of the excellence, ingenuity, and craftsmanship of American manufacturing in the post war years.
